Americans for Tax Reform
Press Release
July 1st, 2009
“Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) today commends the Louisiana Legislature and Gov. Bobby Jindal for enacting a fiscally sound FY09-10 budget and for rejecting new taxes this year…
“Legislators considered, but ultimately rejected, three tax increases that would restore some slashed state spending. Senate Bill 335,
a retroactive tax increase on excess itemized tax deductions, was proposed in the Senate but was derailed in the House by Speaker Jim Tucker (R-Terrytown) because of the bill’s unconstitutionality. House Bill 569, a usage tax on internet access, was passed by a large margin in the House but was killed by the Senate Commerce Committee. House Bill 689, a massive tax increase on cigarettes and other tobacco products, was rejected by a large margin in the House. Together, these three tax hikes would have cost taxpayers $212.4 million in FY 09 and $608.2 million over the next three years…
“‘I commend Gov. Bobby Jindal for his steadfast leadership in opposing all new tax increases. Louisiana families are struggling to live within their means, and lawmakers in Baton Rouge led by Gov. Jindal understood this and reduced their spending to do likewise,’ added [Grover] Norquist [president of ATR]. ‘These policymakers should be recognized for their dedication to fiscal responsibility and pro-growth economic priorities.’”
