“…The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in Louisiana finds Vitter leading Melancon 57% to 34%. Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate, and six percent (6%) are undecided.

Vitter had a nearly identical 57% to 33% lead last month.

The incumbent has clearly been gaining unlike Melancon who has been frozen in the low – to mid-30s for months…

Voters not affiliated with either of the major parties prefer Vitter by a 64% to 19% spread.

Vitter, like other Senate Republicans, has strongly opposed the national health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. That’s good politics in Louisiana where opposition to the plan is higher than it is nationally…

Just 33% of Louisiana voters favor the health care plan, while 64% oppose it. These findings include 22% who Strongly Favor the plan versus 55% who Strongly Oppose.

How that translates helps to explain Vitter’s commanding lead in the race for now. Melancon carries 85% of those who Strongly Favor the health care plan, but Vitter earns the support of 89% of those who Strongly Oppose it…

Thirty percent (30%) rate Obama’s handling of health care reform as good or excellent, but 58% say he’s done a poor job…”
